Reasons You Might not be Able to Donate Blood

Donate blood and save lives.

Donating blood is indeed a noble act and also has many great health benefits. Unfortunately, not everyone is allowed to donate blood and there are certain eligibility criteria that you have to meet to be able to donate blood.

So, before you consider donating blood to anyone, you must consider some factors to find out whether you can donate blood or not. This blog post will highlight some of the reasons why you might not be allowed to donate blood.

Age

Before anything else, to be eligible to donate blood, you must be considered an adult. While the minimum eligibility age may vary from state to state, some hospitals may also have special criteria when it comes to age. You should neither be too young, nor be too old at the time of donating blood.

In most places, people under the age of 16 are not allowed to donate blood whatsoever. Similarly, there’s a maximum age limit as well.

Diseases

Health experts also don’t risk taking blood from anyone who has a certain medical condition that might be transferred through their blood. Whoever wishes to donate blood must get their blood tested for diseases such as T. pallidum (syphilis), HTLV-II, HIV-1, HIV-2, human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I, West Nile Virus (WNV), the hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus.

Apart from these tests, you’ll also be asked about your sexual activities and if you have been involved in unsafe sexual behavior, you’ll be denied from donating blood.

Underweight or Other Weaknesses

Since donating blood requires a lot of energy and there’s a risk of feeling a little weak afterward, those who are underweight, or already show some signs of weaknesses may also be denied from donating blood. Similarly, after fever, malaria and some other illnesses, patients aren’t allowed to donate blood until they fully recover.

Phlebotomy on Wheels is a mobile lab service provider. It was founded in 2013 to provide its customers a wide range of services to address their needs. The company charges their private patients depending on the location and the nature of the test. However, our services are affordable regardless of wherever people live.

The clients can choose how they wish to receive the results. We can also reach out to the client’s doctor’s office directly in case the client has lost the order for tests and save them the hassle of going to the doctor again.
