Why People Fear Donating Blood

According to stats, almost 37% of the US population is eligible to donate blood. However, only 10% of those eligible, actually donate.

Blood centers, throughout the country run out of blood multiple times throughout the year. Here are a few reasons most people don’t donate blood, and how you can address the situation to help those in need.

1.    Fear of Needles

One of the top reasons people avoid donating blood is a fear of needles. If, however, you discuss this concern with someone who’s had this experience earlier, they will tell you that it’s only a matter of seconds. A professional phlebotomist can draw out blood quickly and you’ll only feel a slight initial pinch.

Pro Tip: If you want to donate blood, just take a few minutes before the process and think about the good you’re doing.

You can also read the donation process beforehand to get a clear picture of what actually happens. Besides, listening to good music, chatting with a friend, or just reading a book can also help you calm your nerves and get prepared for donating blood.

2.    Fainting

Another reason why people don’t donate blood is the fear of fainting. Research, however, shows that fainting during or after donating blood is rare. According to a study, less than 1% of people faint during donating their blood. Plus, less than 4% of people faint after a donation.

Pro Tip: Most people feel perfectly alright while donating blood. If, however, you feel fatigued before donating blood, just lie down and relax for some time.

During this time, you can comfort yourself by focusing on how fast a body recovers the lost blood after donation. The human body typically consists of 10 pints of blood and generally, you only donate a pint that is recovered in a short time.

3.    Blood Type

Most people assume that their type is not in demand. This is, however, a misconception.

Understandably, most blood centers run short of type A, B, and O. But, during the winter and summer holidays, due to a large number of injuries and accidents, all blood types are needed. You can help blood centers prevent shortages by donating blood, once every six months.

Besides, some people who’ve had some illness, start to believe they’re not eligible for donating the blood. However, numerous health conditions don’t disqualify you from donating blood. Also, the criteria for blood donation keep changing from time to time. So, if you are willing to donate blood, stay up-to-date.
